A Guide to PUKs
A PUK code or Personal Unlock Key is a unique code that is linked to your cell phone’s SIM card and is usually eight digits long. If you have set a PIN to protect your SSIM card and have entered the wrong passcode three times, you will need the PUK code to unlock and access your phone. Usually, it is not too hard to find the PUK code.
What is PUK Code?
If you have a PIN number on your SIM card for additional security, you will need to enter the PIN each time you turn your phone on. Otherwise, the PUK code will only be needed if you enter the PIN for the SIM wrong too many times. If you do this, a message will appear on your phone saying the PUK is locked. You’ll need to then enter your PUK code in order to access your phone. The SIM card will be locked if you enter the PUK code wrong three times. You’ll need to get a new SIM card if you enter the PUK code wrong more than ten times.
Is a PUK Code the Same as a PAC Code?
Each SIM card has a unique eight-digit PUK code that is designed to protect the SIM. It is different to a PAC code, which is used to port your number from one carrier to another. There are several reasons why you may want to know your PUK code. You may need it if you are moving from one network to another and getting a new phone that is locked to another network but want to keep your old number. Finding your PUK code is usually quite simple although it can vary depending on your network provider. Bear in mind that some carriers might limit the length of time that your PUK code will be active and you will need to get a new one.
How to Unlock PUK Code
To find your PUK code, the first place to look is the SIM card packaging. The PUK may be printed on the packaging if you have recently purchased a new SIM card. It might be on the label or on the box or envelop that your SIM arrived in. If you can’t find the PUK code, call the network who will be able to assist you in finding it.
Since your PUK code is unique to your SIM card, you will only be able to get it from your mobile carrier. Some networks will provide you with the PUK code when you get the SIM card, but not all of them do. If you can’t find your PUK code with the SIM card, the best thing to do is call the mobile network and provide them with your new phone number. They will then be able to give you the PUK code or generate a new one for you once you have passed any security checks. You will usually need to prove your identity before you can get the PUK code, which will typically involve providing your address and date of birth.
You may also be able to find your PUK code online if you have an online account with your network provider. To do this, use your computer or app to log into your mobile network account and look for a PUK code setting on the account page. Where this is located in the account may vary based on the network provider that you are with. If you’re using AT&T Wireless, for example, you should select the ‘myAT&T’ tab at the top of the page and then select the ‘wireless’ option, where you will find an option to unblock your SIM card under the ‘phone/device’ tab. This will open up a new page where your PUK code will be displayed. If you do not already have an online account with your phone network provider, it is easy to create one with some basic personal information and your mobile number.
Mobile PUK Code Unlock: How To
Once you have your PUK code, you can enter it into your phone. You will usually need to do this if you have a notification show up on the phone prompting you to enter the PUK code. Follow the instructions on your phone to complete the process. There may be different steps depending on the mobile phone handset model that you are using, but most will inform you that the phone is locked and that your PUK needs to be entered to access it.
If you have been asked to enter the PUK because you have entered the PIN for the SIM wrong too many times, you will need to create a new SIM card PIN once you have entered the PUK code. Once you have done this, your phone should be unlocked and ready for you to use again. Depending on your phone and network, you may be required to enter **05** before your PIN code. For example, you will need to do this if you have a Nexus One phone.
Phone Locked: PUK Code for Moving Networks
In some cases when you purchase a new mobile phone handset, it might be locked to the carrier that you purchased it from. This means that you will not be able to switch providers as the phone is only compatible with the network that it is linked to. While this is not as much of a common issue today as it once was, as most handsets come unlocked, it might be an issue that you deal with if you have purchased a phone on a contract and decided to switch carriers and keep your handset once the contract runs out. In this situation, the easiest and most popular way to unlock your phone so that you can use it with a different carrier’s SIM card is by using a PUK code. When you enter the SIM card from another carrier into a locked handset, you will usually see a notification to tell you that the SIM card cannot be used on this network and that you need the PUK code to unlock it. Find the PUK code from your SIM card packaging or by contacting the network provider and enter it. You should then be able to use your phone as normal with the new carrier.
What’s a PUK Number and Can I Unlock My Phone Without One?
A PUK code is a Personal Unlocking Key that you will need to unlock your phone if you want to use a SIM card that isn’t compatible due to the handset being locked to another network, or if you have set a PIN to protect your SIM card and have entered it incorrectly three times.
If your SIM is locked, the PUK code is usually the only way that you can unlock it and access your phone. Don’t try to guess your PUK code as if you enter it incorrectly too many times, the SIM will be locked permanently, and a replacement will need to be ordered. If you do not have the packaging that your SIM came in to get the PUK code, you can contact your provider to get it. If you’re not sure who your provider is, just take the SIM card out of the phone; your provider’s name should be on it.
If you can’t access your PUK code, it doesn’t work, or you have entered it incorrectly too many times and permanently locked your SIM card, you will need to get a new SIM from your provider. Losing access to your SIM card is the worst case scenario, but the good news is that this is not a difficult fix since your network provider can simply send out a new SIM connected to your number for you to replace the locked one in your phone, and you should get access to your phone again. If you can’t wait that long to get a new SIM, you can find a cheap Pay and Go SIM to use in the meantime, although this will mean that you will have a temporary phone number until your new SIM card arrives.
If your phone SIM has been locked permanently and requires a replacement, don’t panic as this doesn’t mean that you have lost access to your phone forever – simply changing the SIM will give you access to your handset again. While you can store contacts or texts on your SIM card, most people don’t do this anymore as they are automatically stored in the handset, so you won’t need to worry about losing any of the data on your phone if you accidentally lock your SIM by entering your PUK incorrectly too many times and need to order a new one.
A PUK code is a unique code that you can use to unlock your SIM card if it is PIN-protected or if you want to use it in a handset that is locked to a different network. It is usually found on the SIM card packaging, or you can easily get it from your carrier.
