Safer Internet School Grant

Why Internet Safety matters

As the leading communications and entertainment provider, Flow connects many Jamaicans to the internet and we’ve embraced the responsibility to help protect all Jamaicans from online harm. But we can’t do it on our own. That’s why we’ve created the Safer Internet School Grant. We want to hear of all the amazing ideas our youths have of how internet safety can be better promoted in our schools. The schools with the best implementable ideas will receive funding from the Flow Foundation to bring their ideas to life. By doing this, we’re helping to build the momentum towards developing a culture of internet safety in our schools, homes and the nation. This is how we will stay connected and protected!

Rules

  1. Open to all high schools
  2. Only one submission is allowed per school
  3. Submissions must be done by groups of 3-5 students with teacher supervision
  4. Submissions must include a written outline of the proposed project and should be accompanied by a 2-minute recorded video summarizing the proposal.
  5. Submissions must be emailed to jam-flowfoundationja@cwc.com
  6. 6. The competition is open between January 31- February 21, 2023
  7. The winners will be announced on February 28
  8. Schools will have up to April 30 to implement their project
  9. Upon approval of winning schools, funds will be disbursed within seven days of receiving banking information.
  10. The projects developed by the schools can be used by Flow in its safer internet awareness campaign.

Criteria for Project Proposal

  • Educating students on how to use the internet safely is the number one goal
  • This can be done in any manner chosen by the school, but it must be realistic to the available budget of $250,000
  • A detailed budget must be included in proposal
  • Project proposals can come in any form the school decides and may include an event such as a concert or talent competition, a marketing campaign, an app development, among others.
  • Project must target the entire school population
  • Project must include direct interface/engagement with student body by the project team
  • The project should include key online safety themes affecting teenagers such as cyberbullying, self-identity, online predators and breach of privacy.

Online Safety Tips

Do not provide passwords/codes, click on links or open any attachments or pop-up screens from sources you are not familiar with.

Be wary of requests to provide information in order to win cash or prizes.

Ensure that you have a strong password - at least eight characters in length with a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

Keep your personal information personal – use privacy settings.

Always protect your home wireless network with a password.

Before conducting transactions online, make sure that the website uses secure technology – verify that the web address begins with https.
